"HOMELESS MAN"
by Sal Mantegna

.
.
I'm angry - his pants are too low. I laugh - her hair is purple.
I avert my eyes - he's in a wheelchair.
I shake my head - they sleep on the sidewalk.
They are all different, aren't they?
Not like me, but so like me, part of me.
Embrace this difference. This sameness.

FROM THE ARTIST: "Twentieth century artist Claes Odenburg stated: 'Art is a technique of communication. The image is the most complete of all communications.' In my figurative paintings I tried to convey a sense of despair and helplessness on the part of the homeless in an effort to increase public awareness for this serious and persistent social problem."
