THE ARTIST: "The photograph was inspired by the power
of the location, the American Cemetery, Colleville-sur-Mer, Normandy,
France. I had long wanted to visit there, and in my mind's eye had
seen the perfectly aligned rows of white crosses, as I've seen in
many pictures. But, of course, not all of the markers were crosses,
and as obvious as this simple fact is in hindsight, the initial impact
of this visual was enormous. The stories of brotherhood and sacrifice
surrounding this hallowed site have been told in many ways. This image
