Embracing Our Differences

"Just me, I am just me, nothing special. Just me, I can be nothing but me.
But I can be a friend, or see how you see. But I’m still just me."

Internet Resources for Study and Action

View 101 simple ideas to promote equality and diversity.

Teaching Tolerance -Teaching Tolerance is the principal online destination for people interested in dismantling bigotry and creating, in hate's stead, communities that value diversity.   Founded in 1991 by the Southern Poverty Law Center, Teaching Tolerance provides educators with free educational materials that promote respect for differences and appreciation of diversity in the classroom and beyond.  This website provides access to publications and curriculum kits which have earned Oscar nominations, an Academy Award, and more than a dozen honors from the Association of Educational Publishers (EdPress) including the Golden Lamp Award.

Register for the free Tolerance.org e-newsletter which is sent twice per month and features updates on tolerance news, site features and educational programs.

Florida Holocaust Museum - This web site, maintained by the  Florida Holocaust Museum honors the memory of millions of innocent men, women, and children who suffered or died in the Holocaust. The Museum is dedicated to teaching members of all races and cultures to recognize the inherent worth and dignity of human life in order to prevent future genocides.  The Museum played a critical role in shaping legislation that made Florida the nation’s first state to mandate Holocaust education in the public schools from kindergarten through twelfth grade. In a collaborative effort between the Museum and the Pinellas County School System, guidelines were developed for K-12 teachers. The guidelines include grade-appropriate instructional goals and bibliography for teaching the Holocaust. These guidelines are used by teachers throughout the nation as well as in Florida.  The Museum provides a wealth of resource materials to assist teachers including teaching trunks, teacher workshops and a Summer Insutitute co-sponsored by USF.

National Conference for Community and Justice – An organization dedicated to fighting bias, bigotry and racism in America offers links to anti-bias education resources and organizations and includes information and articles on the subjects of hate crimes, racial profiling and more.

Facing History and Ourselves
– National educational and teacher training organization that encourages students to examine racism and prejudice in order to promote a more informed and humane society.

Race:The Power of Illusion - This companion site to the PBS television series of the same name demonstrates how race is both biological myth and social invention. The Web site contains a searchable database for finding information on the science, politics and questions about race.

Education World - Resource site for lesson plans teaching tolerance including lessons on stereotyping, appreciating differences, recognizing how words can hurt
(or heal), and more.
