Thirty years ago I would have been crippled by some combination of the setting his disability, his race and the challenges he faced. But last week, stopped at a light, I didn't look away. We made eye contact and I nodded to acknowledge something. What? Maybe our shared humanity. He returned the gesture and in doing so dropped a foil-wrapped morsel on the ground. He stared at it helplessly from his wheelchair. I looked up. Still red. I shifted to PARK, mashed the emergency brake, jumped out and returned it to him. He grinned. Five second rule meets shared humanity.
