I was a B-24 pilot in World War II. German gunfire shot us down over Italy in 1944. Saved by Italian partisans, we actually met the Pope. After that war for freedom and justice, I kept flying transports for the Air Force. In 1960 my crew and I were having our C-119 repaired at a base in North Florida. We went into town for dinner and my co-pilot, John Mulsak, who was black, was refused service. The waitress whispered in my ear, "We have nice food for him in the kitchen." "We eat together - we are a team," I said as I stood up and walked out. My crew followed. This was not the America we fought for. Where was the justice?
