As a contemporary portraitist, I chose these two three-year old cousins as my subjects. Ryan, on the left, is of Chinese descent; his cousin, Maia, is Amerasian. They were born three days apart and it is impossible to try to separate them. In this portrait, both differences and similarities are equally embraced. The boldness exists in the intense energy that flows between the cousins. Maia is my granddaughter.
