Homeless Man

by: Sal Mantegna,

I'm angry - his pants are too low. I laugh - her hair is purple. I avert my eyes - he's in a wheelchair. I shake my head - they sleep on the sidewalk. They are all different, aren't they? Not like me, but so like me, part of me. Embrace this difference. This sameness.

Artist Statement

Twentieth century artist Claes Odenburg stated: 'Art is a technique of communication. The image is the most complete of all communications.' In my figurative paintings I tried to convey a sense of despair and helplessness on the part of the homeless in an effort to increase public awareness for this serious and persistent social problem.
