Artist Statement

The idea of overcoming obstacles is the inspiration for this image. Fencing, especially barbed wire, denotes separation of territory, a prickly reminder of the “mine vs. yours” mentality that too often leads to conflict and even war. Hopefully, the image of the barbs reaching out to one another in a handshake gesture and forming the “s” in COEXISTENCE conveys that even when there are delineated boundaries between people, politics, religions, etc., there may be great opportunities that lie within a cooperative, peaceful coexistence.
