Lighter Than the Brown Paper Bag

by: Serena Renee, Las Vegas, Nevada

It’s not about being color blind; it’s about seeing the RAINBOW that makes up humans and choosing to appreciate it.

Artist Statement

“Lighter Than the Brown Paper Bag” is the piece that propelled my painting style into what is is today. It is created on the hopefully outmoded theory that African-Americans who were lighter or no darker than the brown paper bag were considered “better” than those who were not. All of my subjects are of AfricanAmerican descent. I have painted all of my figures in bold beautiful colors to state that every shade of every color should be the standard of privilege, equality and beauty in this and all countries.
