Flags show where we come from; actions show who we are.

Artist Statement

The definition of liberty is “the state of being free within society from oppressive restrictions imposed by authority on one’s way of life, behavior, or political views.” Lady Liberty stands exactly for this and as a symbol for the many immigrants in this country. “Reflections of Liberty,” depicts the Statue of Liberty overlooking multiple flags in the water. I was inspired to create this piece after a travel ban took effect, which had a profound influence over which refugees were welcomed into the US. I grew up with the concept that the US is a melting pot of ideas and cultures from all around the world. The country was founded by immigrants and today immigrant families make up over a fifth of the population. I want to send the message that countries, cultures, and ethnicities are united and equal under liberty’s view.
