Artist Statement

Life Doesn’t Frighten Me was created by 8th grade visual arts students at Rowlett Middle Academy as a backdrop in the collaboration with the theater class's performance of “Life Doesn’t Scare Me At All” by Maya Angelou. Artists were inspired by the journey of emotions throughout the poem and the illustrations that inspire by Jean Michelle Basquiat. This artwork expresses fear, courage, and resilience through the eyes of middle school students in a post pandemic world. Students used newspaper, spray paint, acrylic paint, tempera sticks, and glitter while listening to jazz music to feel the rhythm of the poem and create this multi medium masterpiece. Embracing fears while awakening courage to become resilient artists.
