Artist Statement

John Sims was a friend of mine, and his death set off so many things in my heart. The loss was huge for Sarasota, Detroit, New York and the nation. John was truly a genius. His mind never stopped and his ideas, many controversial, were important. He was a BLM activist, math artist, curator, writer, video producer and so much more. There are no words that can fully explain the man behind his art. Art was truly his weapon of choice - be it with quilts, flags, videos, or his words. I will always miss you and this is just a small way for me to show it. John Sims - your life mattered and thank you for being the force that you were - you had to forge through the re-colorization of the Confederate flag, the Pi quilts, the Black Lives Matter movement and so much more.
