Writing on the Wall

Artist Statement

As a secondary art educator in St. Pete, I teach a wide range of students and demographics every day. I wanted to highlight the individualities that my students represent by photographing them in an element that celebrated their differences, not their labels. I placed them in a student bathroom, and instead of negative messages on the wall, my students wrote positive messages. I scanned their handwriting into photoshop and collaborated with their words to create the final piece. The negative stigma around high school stereotypes can be seen in the foreground going down the drain. This piece is meant to celebrate the unity of multiple student diversities at our local high school.
