Artist Statement

My artwork reflects the immense complexities of growing up biracial. The girl in the center is surrounded by hands. Some straightening her hair, some braiding it, and others painting her skin black or white to show my personal struggles with my race. These actions symbolize how society pressures mixed-race individuals to choose sides, listen to standards, or fit into one place. The butterflies around her act as reminders that nothing is the same and symbolise the importance of embracing that inner beauty of being different or mixed. More noticeably, her tears falling from her eyes depict both the pain of constant judgment and the resilience to keep existing as you are and the journey it takes. Through my imagery and personal challenges, I hope to bring recognition to individuals like me, and for others to recognize the pride and growth that come from being Both and Neither.
