"A world where your skin tone makes you invisible is a world that strips away your humanity."

Why cut your hair? Wear dresses! Use makeup! Girls should be soft and enduring. As a girl who loves comfy, baggy clothes and short hair and who speaks up, I hear these words often. We’re expected to fit into a mold; to look, behave and live in a certain way. But even when we try, we can't satisfy everyone. And in trying to fit in, we lose ourselves. This artwork is for everyone trapped in those expectations whether by traditions, or peer pressure. From people silenced by culture to teens thinking of plastic surgery just to belong. The right side is trapped in a mold; long light hair, sealed mouth, heavy makeup, jewelry; symbolizing the “perfect” girl. The left is free; short dark hair, no makeup, messy hair in the wind, eyes looking up; symbolizing individuality and strength. Don’t let the mold define you. Break it and accept yourself.
