Artist Statement

Breathe celebrates the power of embracing what makes us different-especially visible differences like unique facial pigmentation. I have vitiligo myself, and while it doesn't define me, it's an important part of my identity. Through this painting, I hope to challenge narrow beauty standards and encourage self-acceptance. Our face is central to how we see ourselves and how others connect with us. A fair world is one where everyone, regardless of race, class, or appearance feels seen and valued. The subject is Ralph Souffrant, a Haitian-born model with a condition similar to vitiligo. Once teased for his freckles, he now models for major brands like Fendi and Adidas. As Ralph says: "Now, people embrace them and I love my uniqueness. He's a role model, turning what once set him apart into a source of pride and success. Breathe is about honoring that journey” and encouraging others to embrace their own.
