Artist Statement

Growing up, I often felt the weight of expectations of how I should look, speak, and present myself to fit into the world around me. One day, I overheard a conversation about my hair, a natural extension of my identity, but it was spoken about as if it was something to be 'fixed.' That comment stuck with me, stirring a deep sense of anger and frustration. This piece captures that emotion an explosion of raw vulnerability. The hands pulling and stretching symbolize the external pressures, while the open mouth screams the unspoken pain of not being accepted for who you are. It is a reflection of the inner battle that comes from denying one's true self. I hope this image forces us to confront the pain of non-acceptance, pushing us to embrace the beauty in our differences.
