Intended Audience: K-12 Teachers, Guidance Counselors & Administrators
Our Summer Diversity Institute is a newly developed three-day annual initiative designed to become a model for providing educators all resources necessary to create a safe environment for students to appreciate that a healthy respect for diversity and inclusion is not only a way of thinking—but also, more importantly, a way of being. While developing skills to teach their students the importance of safely standing up for victims of bullying and discrimination, educators learn that anti-bias education is not a linear, one-way delivery of knowledge, but an interactive process that requires adapting to shifting contexts, demands of content and student input.
Based upon feedback from the past Summer Diversity Institute and the guidance counselor’s workshop last January, Embracing Our Differences is inviting teams from Sarasota County Schools who will receive resources and access to experts to assist them in developing a plan for bullying intervention in their school. Plans will include strategies for addressing bullying situations, activities to prevent bullying situations and resources that are aligned to FSA reading and writing, used in a variety of courses including reading, ELA and social studies. 24 continuing education credits will be awarded.
