To launch the program, Embracing Our Differences hosted a teachers’ workshop providing area art teachers with the skills, strategies and resources needed to empower their students to create compelling multicultural artistic statements. As a result, more than 2,200 elementary, middle and high school students from 48 schools created artwork representing 59 of the regatta’s participating countries. The students created their work over two months of integrated arts instruction—an immersive approach that tied together lessons in art with lessons in humanity. The process opened students’ eyes to the tapestry of cultures in our world. We then displayed their creations on billboard-sized banners at the 2017 World Rowing Championships for more than 40,000 spectators and 1,700 athletes to view.
Another exciting component of this initiative was providing transportation for 6,000 area students to attend the tournament over a three-day period, as part of EOD’s "Make-a-Day-of-It!" program.
The Adopt a Team initiative was generously underwritten by the 2017 World Rowing Championships, Benderson Development Company and Embracing Our Differences.
